Evander

“Gunny!”

My body stopped working as the car mounted the curb. The back of the four-by-four was all I saw. There were no brake lights.

Whoever was driving never braked.

The impact was sickening, flesh met metal with a hollow thud, and the sound of tearing cloth followed. I lunged, heart hammering, climbing into my throat as Gunny hit the ground. Fear piercing skin with claws as my dragon rose.

No…no, no.

The roar of the engine filled my head. Her body was a dark blur on the side of the road, there was no sound, no movement. One leg thrashed in the air, the other was missing below the knee.

“No…no. Gunny.” Blubbered words slipped free as I fell to my knees. I reached for her neck, and cradled her head in my arms. Blood smeared her cheek. She was alive—she was alive.

“Hit me…car…hit me.”

I raised my head as tires squealed. In the distance the car swung, and bathed me in a sea of white. The engine was running, but the car was still…waiting…waiting.

“Coming…back. Run, Evander.”

I jerked my gaze down. Her brows were narrow. Her focus a laser on me.

No…

The Harbinger rushed to the surface cleaving skin with claws. I swayed under the smell of the ocean, my heart hammering, my dragon’s hard shell rising up to swallow me.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

My dragon was the sea, and the muddy marsh, choking, consuming, filling me up with the need to protect. I lifted my head finding my center. The waxing moon pulsed with a beat I felt to my core.

The Harbinger shifted under my skin, drawing down her silver rays with each harsh breath. Memories were resurrected. Gunny protected me. She bled for me.

Protect her…

The car shot forward. Rubber searched for grip, fighting to close the distance in the blink of an eye.

The hum inside my ears grew louder. I eased her head to the ground and rose. My clothes, snagged and tore as my skin hardened—the sound of tearing cloth followed.

I stepped to the side, and dropped my arms. Bones hardened, fusing together. My wrists ached as my dragon fought free. I dropped my head to the side, working tendons and muscle as my fingers twisted, merging into two pincers.

Protect her.

Bone softened, muscle gave way to shell. Flat tines erupted from my skin, their edges jagged, and razor sharp. The car’s headlights bounced off my black armor as the vehicle veered right, corrected the sway and gathered speed. I panicked and scurried sideways. The Harbinger overrode my instincts to run and stepped into the path of the oncoming truck.

A shrill scream cut through the air as I raised my arms above my head, inky claws glistened in the light. I could see him, in the orange glow of my dragon. Death was a blur behind the wheel, coming closer…closer.

He’s going to hurt her. He’s going to…

The sharp scent of hot oil smothered me. I could hear the ticking of the engine and underneath the horror, I could smell the stale sent of fear.

Protect her.

With a roar I bore down, saw-bladed edges of my claws pierced the steel.
